Background information

Hello! My name is Athina Kontolati, and I was born in 1998 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. At the age of four, I moved to Athens, Greece, where I have been living for the last 19 years.

5 random fun facts about me

Here are five random fun facts about me, through which you can get to know me a bit better.

#1: I am an ambivert, but my introversion wins most of the time.

#2: In just a few words, my two…

While having limited (paid) working experience

Being an environmentalist — or even just trying to be eco-friendly— is hard enough in itself. But have you ever wondered what it is like to be an environmentalist who tries to find a job in any field and suffers from eco-anxiety, too?

Well, let me tell you about my experience and, perhaps, you might understand what it feels like, or even recognize parts of yourself and your situation in my story.

Being a 23-year-old (environmentalist) with limited (paid) working experience makes it hard to start working sustainably — both financially and environmentally-wise — straight after graduating from university. Especially…

But, at least, we have to try

Being eco-friendly is hard. Ever since I started actively trying and searching for ways to live a more environmentally sustainable life, I often experience feelings of inadequacy. I am afraid that I can’t do enough.

There were always so many things that I wanted to do and as I grow up I want to try even more things and consequently gain more experiences. But every time I try to do something my mind swirls with numerous thoughts such as “Can you do this sustainably?”, “Should you eat this? This was a once-living chicken” “Should you buy that new notebook that…

If we don’t act immediately, yes, it will be.

What is the first thing that comes into your mind when you hear the words “climate change”?

Now, think about the second thing that comes into your mind.

And now the third.

Did any of your thoughts include its impacts on our mental health? And if so, was that your first, second, or third thought? When we think about climate change, we tend to overlook the importance of its psychological consequences.

“Imagine you go outside and you look up in the sky, and there is a comet there. And… you just have been told by scientists that that comet is…

#2: I feel less anxious

A couple of months ago I decided to put my phone on silent mode, indefinitely. Since then, my daily life has changed significantly in three ways.

First of all, my attention span has increased.

This is why I decided to turn my phone on silent mode in the first place. To be honest, I get distracted very easily. So, when I started working remotely, I had to find a way to stop, or at least minimize distractions.

As you can imagine, or even experience yourself, my smartphone was a major distraction for me. …

Where “things” are words, material possessions, and feelings.

As humans, we tend to focus more on what we don’t have, whether it is money, family and friends, or even feelings.

But have you ever thought that letting things go is more important than focusing on how to get more? It can even help you with achieving the same goal, which is ultimately getting what you want.

Initially, it may sound like an oxymoron that you can get more by having less, but there are certain things that once you “let go of them”, your life can be more full, and you will be on the path of achieving…

Do you also appreciate simple things more, now?

Photo by Pro Church Media on Unsplash

The one thing that this pandemic has taught me for sure is to be more appreciative. Now, I appreciate even the simple things more.

Being able to go out for a walk, having a roof over my head, and having the chance to lay down in my bed after a tiring day, are only some of the things for which I have gained a new perspective.

Sure, I find myself whining about things occasionally, or even more often than that, lately. …

Can ‘Medium Designers’ become a thing?

The screenshot was taken by the author

Waking up to changes on Medium seems to be the new normal. Not that I am complaining but I am aware that it can be annoying for some people. However, what we have to keep in mind is that Medium is growing alongside us and our writing careers on the platform. Hence, changes are inevitable, and to be honest necessary since there is no doubt that many things need improvements and/or alterations.

So, can Medium Designers become a thing? In case you haven’t noticed, a new tool has been added to Medium. That tool is “Design”. …

An imaginary story that articulates a real, serious, modern problem that has social, environmental, and economic impacts.

Let’s just pretend for a few minutes that Global South and Global North are people, and let’s say they are estranged siblings living in the same house-Planet Earth-without much of a choice.

Global South (GS): I am sick and tired of watching you throw away food every night while I go to sleep hungry. Do you know how hard is this for me? And you don’t even care; we are siblings for God’s sake!

Global North (GN): Well, honestly, I am just not hungry, and you know how I am, I can’t eat the same food two days in a…

A brief explanation of how

Have you ever wondered how plastic became part of our daily lives and even more so to the degree that we use it nowadays? To which extent is it harmful to both the environment and human health?

Today, one of the most common uses of plastic is for packaging, which results in plastic waste now being also one of the most common sources of environmental pollution [1].

Materials made of plastic started being used for the creation of food packaging and containers instead of previously traditional materials such as ceramic and wicker from the 1950s onwards [1].

As a material…
